Canning 101

With a LOT of help from my mom I successfully preserved my tomatoes. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be, there were just a lot of steps.

Then just for fun we made chili sauce. I grew up eating chili sauce. My grandma Gailey used to make it all the time. It has a pretty strong smell so we set up the camp chef outside so my house would not stink for weeks. I love it on eggs, in baked beans, over cream cheese with crackers. Yummy!!!

After we canned every red tomato in sight we relaxed for the rest of the weekend. Randy watched the kids for me while my mom and I went to lunch and went shopping. That night we did our own pedicures.

Thanks mom for the fun weekend. I'll call you when I get some apples!!!

awww! that looks so fun! I love living at home, but I cannot wait until I can live away from home and have mother-daughter days. We'll be bottling peaches tonight! I cannot wait! I love home making! :)

Canning really is EASY! It is just a matter of having the time to do it and knowing the steps. Congrats on your 1st time doing it.

I'm impressed your tomatoes were ripe fast enough to bottle so many - I've just barely started. I'll have to get your chili sauce recipe.

I had a great time Jen. I really miss you living in the valley. I loved your Sunday German dinner. I am proud of you wanting to learn new things. I will wait to hear from you on the apples. Tell Randy and the kids I love them too.

Gotta love canning season! We just finished 30 quarts ourselves yesterday and did pear jam tonight. Love using my own produce all year long, so worth the time of planting and maintaining!
I would love to have your chili sauce recipe if you're willing to share! millehood@yahoo.com
Love mom and daughter days too! So glad you had fun!

So I have never canned a single thing in my life. I admire you. And I was reading back posts - thanks for steeling my kid 20 minute idea - it reminded me that I need to actually keep doing it everyday. And I'm going to steel your sticker chart for dry through the night idea! Oh, and you should so let me help with whatever I'm allowed to help with for Primary so you can get some sleep. Oh, and I am more than willing to watch your kids if you ever need me!
